India rules out ban on BlackBerry services - PinStack.com

The government today ruled out banning Blackberry operations by mobile service providers but said security aspects would be looked into.

"We will discuss the issue in the Telecom Commission... country's security is of paramount importance," Telecom Minister A Raja told reporters today.

The government is in discussion with cellular operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Reliance Communications, and the issue would be resolved soon.

It's sad that RIM has to jump through hoops and walk on pins and needles to try and please a country who wants to control all media outlets. There is no (civil) reason for India to want to block the message device that the entire world runs on. Big Brother to the max! They're wanting to have complete codes and algorithms to decipher messages if they want to. That's not ok....

I really have a hard time figuring out how the government of India is even allowed to publicly make such demands. Aren't there any civil groups in India who find such claims a bit unnerving? The event is basically an implicit declaration that the government of India is monitoring people's e-mails... Pretty creepy, no?
